Essendon Bombers - 'In the name of the Father'

It is one of league football’s truly remarkable feats. Barring one season, 1992, there has been a Fletcher a Watson or both, playing for the Bombers in every season since 1967.
This is a run spanning 45 completed seasons and almost 1000 games. And it is set to continue for many years to come.
Ken Fletcher began this remarkable stretch when he made his debut in round 3, 1967. He played 264 games, captained the Bombers for three seasons and won the Crichton Medal in 1978, as the club’s best and fairest player. A broken leg hastened his retirement in 1980.
By then Tim Watson has already played four seasons with Ken Fletcher after the young champion played his first league game aged only 15 years in round 16, 1977. Watson had then become the fourth youngest player to debut in league football.
Tim Watson is among the game’s very best. He is a Legend of the Essendon Hall of Fame, is a member of the Bomber’s Team of the Century and played in three premierships. In the last, in 1993, Watson was as team mate and mentor to the club’s famous Baby Bomber side, among whom was Ken Fletcher’s young son Dustin.
Dustin Fletcher made his debut in 1993 and won a premiership medal in only his 17th game. It was Watson’s 298th. Perhaps Fletcher’s finest season was when he was best and fairest winner in the best season of all time, 2000. In that year he also won his second premiership medal. Lauded for his longevity, consistency, powerful kicking and remarkable closing speed, Fletcher has carved a name as one of the game's great full-backs and a Bomber champion.
This year Dustin Fletcher at 37 years of age, plays his 19th season in the AFL and has reached the 350 game milestone. He shows no signs of slowing down.
When Tim Watson’s son Jobe made his debut in round 13, 2003, he joined team mate Dustin Fletcher playing in his 195th game.
Since then Jobe Watson has also been honoured with club captaincy like his father and Ken Fletcher before him and won his second best and fairest award won in 2010. Jobe also now ranks now among the game’s elite midfielders.
Between them this quartet has played in over 1000 games and counting, has played in six premierships, won eight best and fairest medals and already captained the Bombers for nine seasons. And it is not finished yet.
